Lichen is a stable and mutually beneficial symbiotic association between fungi and photosynthetic organisms (green algae or cyanobacteria). Fungi are the main members of lichen, and their morphology and reproduction depend on fungi. In other words, lichen is a kind of special fungi. Lichens were traditionally regarded as special lower plants with fungi and algae symbiosis.

 

In 1867, German botanist schwendner came to the conclusion that lichens are symbiotic by two distinct organisms. Before that, lichens had been mistakenly regarded as a kind of special and single green plant. There are more than 500 genera and more than 26000 species of lichens in the world. Lichens grow everywhere from the poles to the equator, from mountains to plains, from forests to deserts.

 

Lichens are symbiotic complexes of algae and fungi. Because bacteria and algae combine closely for a long time and form a single fixed organism in morphology, structure, physiology and genetics, lichen is listed as lichen phylum. There are about 26000 species belonging to 500 genera.
