Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that is chemically unrelated to any other anticonvulsant or mood regulating medication. Gabapentin received final approval for marketing in the USA on 30 December 1993 and is labeled only for use as an anticonvulsant.

 

It is also widely used to treat individuals suffering from many kinds of pain problems, tremors, restless legs syndrome, hot flashes associated with menopause, and various psychiatric disorders.

Function

Gabapentin is structurally similar to GABA (sc-203053; γ-aminobutyric acid) and is reported in various research studies to increase GABA concentrations within the brain.

Gabapentin is also noted to bind to a novel site on voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels.

Additionally, Gabapentin is reported to demonstrate inhibition of dopamine release from caudate nucleus, preventneuronal cell death, and is antinociceptive.

Gabapentin is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.
