Star anise (scientific name: Illicium verum Hook. F.) is a plant of Illicium family and Illicium genus.Tree, crown tower shaped, elliptic or conical; bark dark gray; branches dense. The leaves are irregularly alternated, obovate elliptic, oblanceolate or elliptic; the fruit of normal scab blooms from March to may, ripens from September to October, blooms from August to October, ripens from March to April next year; the pollen is red to dark red, single leaf axillary or near terminal; the peduncle is 20-56 mm long, the aggregate fruit is full and straight, and the follicles are mostly 8, octagonal.Star anise is a famous flavoring, also used for medicine. Pericarp, seed and leaf contain aromatic oil, which is an important raw material for cosmetics, liqueur, beer and food industry.

Shikimic Acid is extracted from dried fruit/seed of Illicium Verum, which is commonly called star anise or staranise. Shikimic acid powder is white powder, soluble in water(18% in 20ºC water) and insoluble in organic solvent. Shikimic acid powder has antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.Shikimic acid is a key precursor of many alkaloids, aromatic amino acids, indole derivatives, and it also be widely used as a chiral building block for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Now, Shikimic acidserves as the starting material for Oseltamivir which is a neuraminidase inhibitor used in the treatment and prophylaxis of both influenza A and influenza B.
