The active ingredient in senna is called sennoside. This component molecule is converted by microorganisms in the colon into another substance, rhein anthrone, which has a beneficial effect to stimulate colon activity (it accelerates bowel movement and improves digestion) and increases fluid secretion. The laxative effect of sennoside and its active metabolite rhein anthrone are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte in the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of the intestinal contents. It will stimulate the push-type tightening movement of the colon. In addition, the stimulating effect on the secretion of active chloride increases the content of intestinal water and electrolyte. These changes in the transport of active electrolyte depend on calcium on the surface of the serous membrane. The laxative effect of sennoside is partly through the stimulation of colonic fluid and electrolyte secretion, and the secretion ability is regulated by the stimulation of the formation of endogenous prostaglandins. Sennoside can be prepared as an enema or suppository or mixed with a stool softener or a lumpy fiber laxative to form a combined laxative.
