Apitoxin, commonly known as bee venom, is a complex mixture of proteins and other compounds that honeybees produce and inject when they sting. It's primarily used by bees as a defense mechanism.

Composition:

1. Melittin: The main component, making up about 50% of apitoxin. It's responsible for most of the pain and swelling caused by a bee sting. Melittin is a strong anti-inflammatory agent in small doses but can also cause cell damage at higher concentrations.
2. Phospholipase A2: This enzyme makes up about 10-12% of bee venom. It breaks down cell membranes and contributes to the spread of the venom through tissues. It can trigger allergic reactions.
3. Hyaluronidase: Another enzyme in the venom that helps the venom spread by breaking down hyaluronic acid, a component of the connective tissue.
4. Histamine: Involved in allergic reactions, it contributes to the pain, swelling, and itching associated with a bee sting.
5. Adolapin: A component with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
6. Apamin: A neurotoxin that blocks certain potassium channels, which can affect nerve and muscle cells.
