Saw palmetto extract is an extract of the fruit of Saw palmetto.It is a type of small palm tree found in Florida and parts of other southeastern states. It has long, green, pointed leaves like many types of palm trees. It also has branches with small berries. It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols.

 

Saw palmetto extract has been used in traditional and alternative medicine for a variety of indications, most notably benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Saw palmetto has been used to treat symptoms of enlarged prostate, such as increased night-time urination or decreased urinary flow.Other uses, like treating sore throat, cough, cold symptoms, asthma, bronchitis, migraine headache, male-pattern baldness, chronic pelvic pain and prostate swelling, bladder problems, prostate cancer, and other conditions.

 

The fatty acid is a carboxylic acid with a long aliphatic tail (chain), which is either saturated or unsaturated. Fatty acids are
important sources of fuel because, when metabolized, they yield large quantities of ATP. Many cell types can use either glucose or fatty acids for this purpose. In particular, heart and skeletal muscle prefer fatty acids. Despite long-standing assertions to the contrary, the brain can use fatty acids as a source of fuel in addition to glucose and ketone bodies.

1. Prevents hair loss

Saw palmetto plant extract is often used to balance hormone levels and combat hair loss. Saw palmetto may ward off hair loss and increase hair density by decreasing levels of a specific enzyme related to hair loss.

2. Improves urinary tract function
Saw palmetto plant extract may improve urinary tract function and could aid in the treatment of urinary tract symptoms caused by BPH. Still, more research is needed.

3. May support prostate health
Test-tube studies show that saw palmetto may help decrease the growth of prostate cancer cells. It may also help improve symptoms of BPH.

4. May decrease inflammation
Saw palmetto plant extract may have anti-inflammatory properties, which could be beneficial in treating certain conditions. Saw palmetto is high in antioxidants and has been shown to decrease inflammation in some animal studies. Nonetheless, more high-quality human studies are needed.
