Lutein and other carotenoids are considered to be antioxidant. Antioxidants can protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, a destructive by-product of normal metabolism. Free radicals in the body will rob other molecules of electrons and damage cells and genes. This process is called oxidation. Research conducted by the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that lutein fights free radicals like vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant. .
Lutein is concentrated in the retina and crystals and protects vision by neutralizing free radicals and increasing pigment density. For destructive glare, lutein also has a shadowing effect. A small study published in the 1997 issue of Experimental Eye Research showed that lutein can significantly reduce the damage of blue light reaching sensitive parts of the eye. The two subjects who participated in the experiment were for 5 consecutive months. The equivalent of 30 mg of lutein was taken every day.
