Turmeric is a member of the Curcuma botanical group, which is part of the ginger family of herbs, the Zingiberaceae. The root and rhizome stem of the Curcuma longaplant is crushed and powdered into ground Turmeric. Ground Turmeric is used worldwide as a seasoning and is the source of Curcumin.
It is otherwise known as Turmeric, which is native to India and Southern Asia and is widely cultivated in India, China, Indonesia and other tropical countries. It grows well in humid climate. The extracts are taken from the rhizome, which has a characteristic bright yellow color. Turmeric contains 0.3-5.4% curcumin, an orange yellow volatile oil composed mainly of turmerone,atlantone and zingiberone. 

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric. In Indian and Asian cultures, turmeric and curcumin have a long history of use as a traditional herbal medicine, and Western medicine is beginning to study the potential of turmeric in treating diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
