Arbutin is known as one of the three whitening artifact, and its ability to desalt melanin is very good. For arbutin, the most important role is whitening, depigmentation. Melanin is a kind of deep pigment, which can cause skin coloring. There are a series of biochemical reactions such as oxidation of phenylalanine ammonia or tyrosine in melanocytes. Tyrosinase has both the activity of tyrosine carboxylase and the activity of dopa oxidase, which is the key factor of melanin synthesis in melanocytes. Arbutin can quickly penetrate into the skin, without affecting the concentration of cell proliferation, can effectively inhibit the activity of tyrosinase in the skin and block the production of melanin. Through its direct binding with tyrosinase, competition for DOPA binding site, accelerate the decomposition and excretion of melanin, thus reducing the deposition of skin pigment. Therefore, arbutin has the function of whitening and depigmentation.
