Senna, also known as zhannaye, XieYe and paozhuye, is derived from the leaflets of the leguminous plant Senna angustifolia or Senna acuminata. Folium sennae is a kind of irritant laxative. It can stimulate intestinal peristalsis through intestinal mucosa and nerves. It is a powerful drug and should be used as little as possible. It works on the colon and usually takes effect within a few hours.

Senna Leaf Extract belongs to a large genus of flowering plants found throughout the tropics, commonly used species being Cassia acutifolio (Alexandrian senna) and C. angustifolio (Indian or Tinnevelly senna). Extracts of the leaves, flowers and fruit of senna have been used for centuries in folk medicine as a laxative and stimulant. Senna is also included in several herbal teas,used for purging and in weight loss. The active components in senna extracts are anthraquinone derivatives and their glucosides, referred to as senna glycosides or sennosides.

Sennosides is a kind of dianthone derivative in senna leaf. It is an effective part with high content in senna leaf. It is also the main active ingredient for Purgation and hemostasis of senna leaf. Senna is distributed in southern provinces of China, and it is produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Hunan and other places.
